One of my customer websites, Amy Lyn’s Chocolates (Amy Lyns Chocolates, or Amy Lyns Candies, as it was previously named) has an uncommon spelling in their name. Many people who hear the name Lyn, think of the Lyne or Lynne spelling instead. Helping them to find the real website is a challenge.

Update:  I’ve found, with some sample searches, that the apostrophe in the name is also being indexed… so if people don’t type in the apostrophe in Lyns, they won’t necessarily find the site.   So this post uses the names without the apostrophes… search engines, do your thing!  I’ll update this post in a few days with the results…

One of my customer websites, Amy Lyn’s Chocolates has an uncommon spelling in their name. Many people who hear the name Lyn, think of the Lyne or Lynne spelling instead. Helping them to find the real website is a challenge. I’ve read that some search engines don’t use meta tags anymore for indexing, so the text has to be visible somewhere on the site. I’m not sure if I should put these other spellings on the site, and even if I do, they won’t be indexed as high in the results since they aren’t in the title of the page. One solution might be to create some subdomains under yawebhost.com, such as amylynnschocolates.yawebhost.comamylynneschocolates.yawebhost.com, and amylyneschocolates.yawebhost.com… I’ll create pages at each of those urls, put up a little explanation of the real site, and then do a meta refresh to the real site.  OK search spiders, come do your thing!
